Applying for NDIS Funding

You can access the NDIS (Early Childhood Early Intervention) if your child has a diagnosis of ASD or Developmental Delay and is under the age of 6 years old. If you don’t have a formal diagnosis, you can still apply for NDIS funding under Developmental Delay if your child is showing a delay in more than one developmental area.

To apply to the NDIS, you will make contact with your local Early Childhood Partner, and complete an Access Request Form.

If your child is over the age of 6 years old, please refer to the NDIS website as you will need to contact the NDIS directly to apply for your child to become a participant and require a diagnosis.

Accessing Your First NDIS Plan

If your child is granted access to NDIS funding you will go through a planning meeting that will determine the level of supports your child will receive in their first plan.

You will meet with an Early Childhood Partner, not with the NDIS directly, and you will be asked lots of questions about your child’s skills, their daily life and what you would like for your child’s future. To get the best result you will provide evidence and be prepared for the questions that will be asked. You will also set goals for your child in collaboration with the Early Childhood Partner.

Generally, you will receive a plan for a period of 12 months.

NDIS Planning Meetings

A planning meeting will take place before the end of each plan to review your child’s progress towards the goals that were set. You will also discuss your circumstances and what new goals your child will work towards over the next 12 months.

Once you have been accessing therapies through NDIS for a year you will have a good idea of what you would like for the next year.

It is important you have appropriate evidence to support your goals and therapy hours for the following 12-month NDIS Support plan. A new 12-month plan will be determined as a result of this meeting.

Requesting a Review

If you are not happy with the plan your child has received you are able to apply for a review within the first 90 days of the plan commencing. This generally does not require a meeting, but does require very specific evidence to support your NDIS application.
